Sound change, misanalysis, and analogy in the Bantu causative

چکیده
In this paper I document and analyze a number of analogical reanalyses due the process of pre-high-vowel “frication” triggered by the Proto-Bantu causative suffix *-i̧-. A first set of complexities arises from the interaction of the causative suffix with applicative *-idand perfective *-ii̧d-e. A second set of complexities derives from the prevocalic gliding of *-ii̧to [y] when this latter is absorbed into the preceding fricative, e.g., s-y-a > [sa]. In the first case, interesting "cyclic" phonology properties result; in the second case, non-causative roots which happen to end in [s] may acquire other phonological properties of causatives.

The Consequences of the Contacts between Bantu and Non-Bantu Languages around Lake Eyasi in Northern Tanzania
In rural Tanzania, recent major influences happen between Kiswahili and English to ethnic languages rather than ethnic languages, which had been in contact for so long, influencing each other. In this work, I report the results of investigation of lexical changes in indigenous languages that aimed at examining how ethnic communities and their languages, namely Cushitic Iraqw, Nilotic Datooga, N...
متن کاملSpirantisation in morphologically driven phonology The causative in Bemba
The causative suffix in Bantu is renowned for assimilations that result in spirantisations of stem final consonants thereby resulting in some change to the shape of the causativised verbal base. Departing from a cyclic analysis I shall claim that the causative suffix has two alternating shapes whose spirantisation effects can be captured by a strictly non-cyclic approach with reference to nonan...
متن کاملSlouching towards deponency: A family of mismatches in the Bantu verb stem
1. INTRODUCTION. Most Bantu languages have a set of highly productive verbal deriva-tional suffixes which alter the argument structure and semantics of basic verb roots. 1 One example of such a suffix is the Causative, which gives a verb stem causative semantics and allows it to take an extra causer argument. A prototypical instance of the use of the Causative, drawn from Chichewa (Baker 1988:1...
متن کاملAerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy
The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...
متن کاملLexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs
The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...
